The Memphis Slim Collaboratory Story
The Memphis Slim Collaboratory (Slim House) is a multi-purpose hub for Memphis’ vast community of musicians, and a lever for the Memphis Music Magnet, a cityside strategy to cultivate Memphis’ vibrant music industry for economic growth.
Born from the city’s rich musical heritage, Slim House nurtures future generations of Memphis artists. Located in the Soulsville USA neighborhood, the award-winning facility occupies the former home of renowned blues pianist and singer John "Peter" Chatman, better known as Memphis Slim. Born in Memphis in 1915, Memphis Slim became a pivotal figure in blues music, recording over 500 songs and influencing countless musicians worldwide. After Slim's passing in 1988, his childhood home fell into disrepair. Recognizing its historical and cultural significance, the nonprofit organization Community LIFT, led by then-President & CEO Eric Robertson, spearheaded efforts to restore the property. Collaborating with the University of Memphis' City and Regional Planning Department, the initiative aimed to revitalize the Soulsville area by leveraging its musical legacy. The restoration, guided by brg3s architects, preserved elements of the original structure while introducing modern design features. Notably, the front porch, where Slim once entertained legends like Rufus Thomas and Isaac Hayes, was transformed into an exterior stage, fostering community engagement.
The Collaboratory opened in April 2014 during the Stax to the Max festival, offering rehearsal space, recording studio, and educational workshops at deeply discounted rates for professional and amateur musicians alike. Members pay an annual fee to access the facility, which also provides a welcoming space for artists to build community. The Collaboratory hosts events like "Live From Memphis Slim," featuring performances and live art, and "Memphis Sandbox," where artists from diverse genres collaborate spontaneously.
