The Memphis Slim Collaboratory Story

The Memphis Slim Collaboratory (Slim House) is a multi-purpose hub for Memphis’ vast community of musicians, and a lever for the Memphis Music Magnet, a cityside strategy to cultivate Memphis’ vibrant music industry for economic growth.

Born from the city’s rich musical heritage, Slim House nurtures future generations of Memphis artists. Located in the Soulsville USA neighborhood, the award-winning facility occupies the former home of renowned blues pianist and singer John "Peter" Chatman, better known as Memphis Slim.  Born in Memphis in 1915, Memphis Slim became a pivotal figure in blues music, recording over 500 songs and influencing countless musicians worldwide.  After Slim's passing in 1988, his childhood home fell into disrepair. Recognizing its historical and cultural significance, the nonprofit organization Community LIFT, led by then-President & CEO Eric Robertson, spearheaded efforts to restore the property. Collaborating with the University of Memphis' City and Regional Planning Department, the initiative aimed to revitalize the Soulsville area by leveraging its musical legacy. The restoration, guided by brg3s architects, preserved elements of the original structure while introducing modern design features. Notably, the front porch, where Slim once entertained legends like Rufus Thomas and Isaac Hayes, was transformed into an exterior stage, fostering community engagement.

The Collaboratory opened in April 2014 during the Stax to the Max festival, offering rehearsal space, recording studio, and educational workshops at deeply discounted rates for professional and amateur musicians alike. Members pay an annual fee to access the facility, which also provides a welcoming space for artists to build community. The Collaboratory hosts events like "Live From Memphis Slim," featuring performances and live art, and "Memphis Sandbox," where artists from diverse genres collaborate spontaneously.

Local artists describe Slim House as “An amazing creative space” and “The place to be!!” The Collaboratory's success to date underscores the importance of revitalizing landmarks that gave Memphis its unique culture and investing in community-based initiatives. By honoring Memphis Slim's legacy, the Collaboratory ensures that our economy grows from within and our music is known around the world.

Educate.

At Memphis Slim Collaboratory, education sounds like rhythm, mentorship, and lived experience. We believe learning should be hands-on, intergenerational, and rooted in the legacy that built this city’s sound. From music production and audio engineering to artist development and creative entrepreneurship, we equip emerging creators with the tools to move confidently within the creative economy. Here, knowledge is shared across generations, honoring Memphis’ rich musical heritage while preparing the next wave of innovators to shape what comes next. We teach ownership, excellence, and possibility.

Support.

Creativity needs more than talent, it needs access. At Slim House, support means opening doors that too often feel closed. We provide studio space, mentorship, collaboration opportunities, and pathways to real growth. We meet artists where they are and walk with them toward where they’re going. Our work is grounded in equity and fueled by community, ensuring that independent voices have the infrastructure to thrive. When artists have space to create, connect, and build sustainably, the entire neighborhood rises with them.

Inspire.

Memphis Slim Collaboratory exists at the intersection of legacy and future. Inside these walls, the spirit of Memphis Slim lives on, not as history frozen in time, but as energy that pushes us forward. We inspire bold expression, fearless storytelling, and collaboration across backgrounds and generations. Through music, gatherings, and shared creative moments, we remind Memphis that our culture is our power. We are rooted in the past, but we are building what’s next, together, shaping the sound, the story, and the future of Memphis music heritage.
